MAKING OF Carneval fragrance

Hello and welcome to Carneval behind the scenes blog post.

Production & Preproduction

Production was very tight and low budget, we spent about 150,-EUR in total.
All footage was taken early in the morning(btw. Prague is really magical in the morning:)) because we needed city without too much people.

We started at 4 am and with no assistants, (permissions) the whole production within 3 location changes takes only 4hrs.

Captured with Canon 5dMKII, Technicolor CineStyle and Canon lenses 2,8/24-70 and 2,8/70-200.
Other equipment we used was tripod, Glidetrack, Marshall monitor and Zacuto rig.

Postproduction

Edited in Final Cut Pro.

There was some work in AFX too:

  • color grading
  • 2x cleaning location from garbage can
  • 1x sky replacementp
  • packshot compositing with typo
  • titles

PORTFOLIO GERMANY

BIG news! Next week I’ve my first shooting in Germany. You can imagine how happy I am :)

I’ve there also meeting with my local agent so I need to bring some printed pieces from recent work. I do some research and in Prague I found only 2 relevant printers - Thalia Picta and 44print. I printed with Thalia Picta before, but this time I decided to try something new. And I’ve to say it was good choice, guys from 44print are very professional and I’m very happy with the result. I printed on Hahnemulle Photo Rag 188 and the colors, sharpness and also price are brilliant.

Thank you guys…

MPEG STREAM CLIP VS 5DTORGB

In my previous post, I noticed I’m using MPEG Streamclip rather than Apple Compressor for converting footage from 5D to Apple ProRes family. User on Cinema5d forum pointed me to another great alternative - 5DtoRGB by Rarevision.

Here is quick test I made with footage converted to Apple ProRes 422.

  •  Seems like there’s a little color shift mainly in reds compared to MPEG Streamclip output.
  • + There’s markable better detail quality on files converted with 5DtoRGB. (Take a look at edges of the red handbag
  • - missing batch list

QUESTIONS

Dear readers, followers. I just added Questions? feature left to the menu. Do you have any?

BEHIND iPAD MAGAZINE FASHION STORIES

PRODUCTION

All production and idea was very simple. I did this for the first time in my life so I wanted no big expenses with the project. On set there was only stylist and model in one person, makeup artist and me as DOP, director, asistant. 50,-EUR total with taxi.

Lighting was also very simple. Natural daylight from window supported with one 2kW Helder light thru silk and one backlight(strobe bowens 750+ with pilot light on)

Footage was shot on Canon 5DMKII with lenses 2,8/24-70mm L and 2,8/70-200mm L. Other used equipment was Glidetrack HD, Zacuto Crossfire and Marshall 70LCDxp monitor.

PICTURES

I didn’t make many backstage pictures, because I was busy with shooting, so here is only one followed with some screenshots.

WORKFLOW

  • Preparing layouts in Photoshop, later import to Motion
  • Selecting good footage
  • Converting this clips Apple ProRes Proxy
  • FCP - Offline edit
  • Selecting used clips and converting them to Apple ProRes 422
  • Apple ProRes 422 seq to Color
  • Grading
  • Back to FCP
  • Export Apple ProRes 422 graded seq
  • Motion
  • Export ProRes 422 movie
  • ProRes 422 movie to H.264/5MBps for sharing

HARDWARE & SOFTWARE

I did all postproduction and editing on MacBook Pro 2,53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8GB DDR3 RAM.

All editing, post and grading workflow was based on Final Cut Pro, Color and Motion.

For converting footage I found MPEG StreamClip much faster and more stabile than Apple Compresor so I’m using thtat all the time.
